SEO is an acronym for search engine optimisation. Used to explain the techniques used to increase the visibility of your website on the search for keywords related to your product, brand or market. This can be with Google, Bing or Yahoo.
Organic results are the positions that appear in the search engine for “free”. Depending on the algorithm. Paid on the other hand, are results located at the top or in the sidebar. These links are paid for by advertisers to appear for targeted keywords.
Meta tags nowadays will be referring to the title and description. These appear in the search engine when displaying your site. It’s algorithm does that automatically now.
This is debateable question. Google used to value keyword domains, however the algorithm is smarter now. They still work, but not as affective. Brandable domains usually work best, so please go with your brand if possible.
There is no exact number of times to use the keyword or the right percentage. You just have to use natural language when building your website. Do not over-do it with keywords. The density we usually aim for is 0.5-1% of the content. But, there is no magic number.
Easy! An internal links is where you link from “inside” your website. So from a blog post to your homepage. An external link is website from any website but your own. So a business directory link is an external one.
This is the page that gives the search engines information about your website on how it will be indexed or crawled… however, search engines can ignore this :( - find yours at yourwebsite.co.uk/robots.txt
This is a catalogue if you will, of all your website pages that can be used by the search engine to find all the content quickly. This is a great way to index new pages.
Simply go to Google.com and use the “site:” operator. An example of this is “site:position1.co.uk” and you will see all my indexed pages.
As a search engine can not read images (yet), they need Alt tags to help them understand what they are. It also helps user read what the images are when the page does load properly.
When talking about SEO, it isn’t just about how many people you get through to your website. You should be looking at your plan and figuring out ways to find quality traffic to your website.
You need to be pushing qualified prospect to your business through SEO. You should always be going for quality traffic vs quantity of traffic.
